The Gauteng Department of Education has acknowledged that they have learnt of a sex scandal involving a Grade 8 pupil and a teacher at a school, south of Joburg.

The department said it would act on the matter as the allegations were betraying the trust that parents have on the department.
MEC for Education Panyaza Lesufi said that both the learner along with his parent and the teacher have made a sworn statement, denying the existence of the relationship and the parent supporting their child.
“It is quite clear that as the department we are compelled to act. So we will take an appropriate action once we have verified whether the picture is photoshoped or real,” said MEC Lesufi.

He emphasised that the allegations were a serious matter and the department has asked the district office to attend to the matter without any further delays.
The department also said that the teacher would be charged with sexual misconduct if she is found guilty and would be dismissed and struck off the professional roll of educators.

“We once more want to advice all our teachers that it is very important they don’t find themselves in a situation that can be misconstrued as a relationship between a learner and teacher,” MEC Lesufi added.
