Gauteng Premier David Makhura together with Minister of Health Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi and MEC for Health Dr Gwen Ramakgopa announced the team of experts to coordinate recovery plan for Gauteng Department of Health on Sunday in Johannesburg.
The team comprises of Professor Mkhululi Lukhele a professor of orthopaedics at Wits university, Professor Craig Househam a retired professor of paediatrics and child health, Dr Edith Mntla who holds a doctoral degree in Nursing and Ms Nomvula Marawa a nurse by profession, who worked as a Director of Policy Development and System in the National Department of Health.
The provincial department has recently been beset by few challenges which were heightened by the Life Esidimeni tragedy.
Following the Health Ombudsman recommendations, Premier Makhura has been working closely with Minister Motsoaledi and MEC Ramakgopa to implement the recommendations as well as to ensure that the public health system in Gauteng functions optimally.
In recent days, it has emerged that there are critical inadequacies in the capacities and capabilities, and competencies to run the system which have been clearly exposed by the Life Esidimeni tragedy.
In trying to solve these unfortunate incidents, the Premier also recalled from retirement a very experienced health leader who ably led the Department of Health in Gauteng up to 2006 and also served as a Deputy Minister of Health, Dr Gwen Ramokgopa.
Early last week, the Premier announced a skilled and experienced financial manager, Michael Sachs to sort out the financial problems of the Department.
The terms of reference will be fully completed in the next few days but the team will generally deal with Human Resources, Procurement systems, Financial Management, Maintenance of equipment and refurbishment of infrastructure, Health Service delivery system and clinical Governance and Health System Regulatory management, compliance, and quality control.
