MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Human Settlements, Paul Mashatile has made a commitment that the renovations and improvements of Thokoza Hostel in Ekurhuleni will start before the end of the week.

The commitment was made following a meeting of the Hostel’s Izinduna and its steering committee following a protest in June where people were complaining about service delivery and for the Municipality’s failure to make good on the promises to revamp the hostel since 2005.

“We expect the renovations and improvements of the hostel to start tomorrow,” said Mashatile.

The MEC said that future plans to build family units will be discussed with the steering committee of the hostel to ensure residents have an input.

Mashatile said that the Department will also send officials to register residents who stay in the hostel in the housing database and that residents who applied in 1996 will be prioritised in projects in Ekurhuleni.
