Youth shines at Awards

Gauteng youth who are making a difference and contributing to the Province’s growth and development were honoured at the inaugural Premier’s Youth Excellence and Service Awards held on Saturday evening.

The awards are part of the Gauteng Government’s programme to empower young people and restore hope.

The Gauteng government has paid special attention to services and programmes aimed at advancing the development of young people. The province is investing in modernizing education and spending more than R50 million on tertiary education bursaries.

Awardees were recognized in the following categories:

• Special Recognition for young trailblazers
• Community Safety
• Health and Wellness
• Education, training and Skills Development
• Health and Wellness
• Economic Development
• Sport, Art and Culture

Gauteng Premier David Makhura said: "To us nothing is as urgent as giving hope to our young people; this evening is about celebrating youth. No other government has paid so much attention to the issues of young people. We are dedicating resources to create opportunities for young people.”

TV Presenter and media entrepreneur, Nonhlanhla Bakasa co-presented Matrics Uploaded, which aired on SABC1. She was also a presenter of Memba’z Uploaded – a youth talk show.

Bakasa is the founder and Managing Director of AdoWord Multimedia. She runs life coaching programmes at schools and events.

Bakasa who is wheelchair bound received a special recognition award for being a young trailblazer.

“This means a lot to me to be recognized here today. The development of young people is something very close to my heart. I am really honoured,” Bakasa said.
Premier Makhura said investing in the youth is investing in the future and through the Tshepo 1 million programme government will continue to invest in young people.

Through the programme it is hoped 1 million young people will be reached. Tshepo 1 million aims to give young people hope by facilitating entrepreneurship development ,employment and skills development for young people across Gauteng.
